The cannon fire from the Tower at eleven o‘clock took Victor by surprise on the Quai d’Orsay. The Expo was about to close. The dead man had a name like something sweet: Macaroon? Calisson? Marzipan? Meringue … Méring, that was it, Jean Méring.
